What to Expect in Your First Pilates Class

Updated: Sep 11

Starting something new can feel a little daunting — and Pilates is no exception. You might be wondering: Will I be able to keep up? Do I need to be flexible? What even happens in a class?

Take a deep breath — because Pilates is for everyone, no matter your age, experience, or fitness level. If you’re thinking about coming to your first session, here’s exactly what you can expect.

Your consultation.

For me, I always have a 30minute consultation with anyone wanting to start Pilates. This gives you an opportunity to meet me, for us to chat and talk about your goals. We move a little and I share the fundamentals to keep you safe in a group setting and then advise any modifications required for your body. We then discuss what options/classes will suit you best.

A Warm Welcome

When you arrive at the studio/community centre, you’ll be greeted with a friendly face and a calm, inviting space. You don’t need fancy clothes — just comfortable, fitted activewear so you can move freely. Socks with grip are handyrequired for apparatus only, but not essential for Matwork.

Our studio and community centers used are supportive, non-judgmental environments where you can truly focus on you. No mirrors, no competition — just movement, breath, and progress at your pace.

We Start Where You Are

You don’t need any Pilates experience before joining us, just the consultation.

From there, every exercise can be adapted. If you’re brand-new, you’ll be guided step by step, with clear, simple instructions. If you’ve moved before, you’ll be offered challenges to deepen your practice.

The Pilates Method in Action

Depending on your class type, you may use the Reformer, Mat, or other apparatus (like the Cadillac, Chairs, or Barrels). Don’t worry if you’ve never even seen this equipment before — your teacher will show you how everything works and keep you safe.

How You’ll Feel Afterwards

Clients often say they leave their first class feeling taller, more open, and energised. You may discover muscles you didn’t know existed — and yes, you might feel a little sore the next day! That’s a good sign your body is waking up and getting stronger.

Most importantly, you’ll feel a sense of achievement. Pilates isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Every time you come back, you’ll notice small shifts — stronger core, improved balance, better posture, and more ease in daily life.

A Few Tips for Your First Class

  • Arrive a little early so you can settle in.

  • Bring a water bottle, towel and wear comfortable clothing.

  • Don’t compare yourself to anyone else — your journey is your own.

  • Be patient with yourself. Pilates is a practice, and the magic is in the consistency.

Ready to Begin?

Your first Pilates class is the start of something special. You don’t need to “get fit first” or be flexible to begin — you just need an open mind and a willingness to try.

Remember: every expert was once a beginner. With Pilates, you’re not just building strength and flexibility — you’re building confidence, resilience, and a body that supports you in everything you do.

We can’t wait to welcome you to the mat (or Reformer)!
